The Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei in Clusters of Galaxies to Redshift 1.3

چکیده
We have measured the luminous AGN population in a large sample of clusters of galaxies and find evidence for a substantial increase in the cluster AGN population from z ∼ 0.05 to z ∼ 1.3. The present sample now includes 32 clusters of galaxies, including 15 clusters above z = 0.4, which corresponds to a three-fold increase compared to our previous work at high redshift. At z < 0.4 we have obtained new observations of AGN candidates in six additional clusters and found no new luminous AGN in cluster members. Our total sample of 17 low-redshift clusters contains only two luminous AGN, while at high redshifts there are 18 such AGN, or an average of more than one per cluster. We have characterized the evolution of luminous X-ray AGN as the fraction of galaxies with MR < M R(z) + 1 that host AGN with rest-frame, hard X-ray [2–10 keV] luminosities LX ,H ≥ 1043 erg s−1. The AGN fraction increases from fA = 0.134+0.18 −0.087% at a median z = 0.19 to fA = 1.00+0.29 −0.23% at a median z = 0.72. Our best estimate of the evolution is a factor of eight increase to z = 1 and the statistical significance of the increase is 3.8σ. This dramatic evolution is qualitatively similar to the evolution of the starforming galaxy population in clusters known as the Butcher-Oemler effect. We discuss the implications of this result for the coevolution of black holes and galaxies in clusters, the evolution of AGN feedback, searches for clusters with the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect, and the possible detection of environment-dependent downsizing. AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

The detection of resonance absorption lines against known objects such as individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies is a powerful approach for studying the gas content of these systems. We describe an e cient method of identifying background quasars suitable for absorption line studies. In this nding technique, we identify serendipitous X-ray sources, about 1/8 of which are suitably bright q...

We report the discovery of possible overdensities of galaxies at z ∼ 3.7 in Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). These overdensities are identified from a photometric redshift-selected sample, and the BV z-selected sample. One overdensity is identified in the proximity of two active galactic nuclei and Lyman break galaxies at z = 3.66 and z = 3.70 at 7σ significance level. The other overdensity is...
متن کاملNarrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies and the Evolution of Galaxies & Active Galaxies
Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are intriguing due to their continuum as well as emission line properties. The observed peculiar properties of the NLS1s are believed to be due to accretion rate close to Eddington limit. As a consequence, for a given luminosity, NLS1s have smaller black hole (BH) masses compared to normal Seyfert galaxies. Here we argue that NLS1s might be Seyfert galaxie...
